Proper aftercare is essential to ensure your new tattoo heals correctly and maintains its appearance. Adhering to these guidelines will help prevent infection and promote optimal healing.
1. Immediate care if using plastic wrap and ointment:
- Leave the Bandage On: Your tattoo artist will cover your new tattoo with a sterile bandage or wrap. Keep this covering on for at least three hours to protect the area from bacteria and reduce the risk of infection.
- First Wash: After removing the bandage, gently wash the tattooed area with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Avoid using hot water, as it can irritate the skin. Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel; do not rub or scrub.
1a. Immediate care if using derma shield tattoo bandage:
- Shower normally
- Bandage can be worn for 3-5 days
- Do not soak in any bodies of water for at least two weeks including: bathtub, hot tub, lakes, rivers, oceans
- The easiest way to remove bandage is to stretch it going in the same direction as your skin. DO NOT PEEL IT OFF. The stretch will gently pry bandage away from skin. Any peeling should come away with the bandage.
If redness or itchiness occurs around the edge of the bandage you may be having a reaction to the adhesive. Remove bandage and go straight to regular aftercare (above). Also, please inform your tattoo artist. Derma shield is a latex free product.
2. Ongoing care:
- Moisturizing: Apply a thin layer of a recommended ointment, such as a mild fragrance free lotion (Aveeno works best), three times daily for the first three days. After this period, switch to an unscented lotion like Lubriderm or Curel to keep the skin hydrated. Continue this routine until the tattoo has fully healed.
- Avoid Soaking: Refrain from soaking the tattoo in water. Showers are acceptable, but avoid baths, swimming pools, hot tubs, saunas, and Jacuzzis as well as lakes, rivers, and oceans until the tattoo has completely healed.
- Sun Protection: Keep the tattooed area out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning booths until the tattoo is fully healed, typically at least 2 weeks. After healing, apply a high-SPF sunscreen to prevent fading.
- Clothing: Wear loose, clean clothing over the tattooed area to allow the skin to breathe and prevent irritation. Tight clothing can rub against the tattoo, causing discomfort and potentially affecting the healing process.
3. Activities to avoid:
- Physical Activities: (Please use your best judgement, we don’t want anyone missing leg day 😉) Avoid strenuous activities that cause excessive sweating or friction on the tattooed area until it has healed. Sweat can introduce bacteria to the area, increasing the risk of infection.
- Scratching and Picking: As the tattoo heals, it will peel. Do not scratch, pick, or peel the skin, as this can remove the ink and cause scarring or infection.
4. Signs of infection:
- Monitor the tattooed area for signs of infection, such as excessive redness, swelling, pus, or a fever.
***If you experience any of these symptoms please contact your artist immediately. If necessary, they will refer you to seek a medical professional.***
